APIMEDA Lunch and Learn Program

Each summer, APIMEDA Program and Services will coordinate an APIMEDA Lunch & Learn summer reading series.  We identify readings that staff and faculty can read, and then come together to discuss the readings, gain further insight, and think about the ways that the reading can better inform the ways that we work to serve our students at UC San Diego.

Each drawer includes information about each of the APIMEDA Lunch and Learn programs we have hosted. This includes links to the readings, dates of the program, and the location of the reading sessions. We encourage you to sign up for the current program and read any of the current and previous readings for the Lunch and Learn programs.

2024 Program

For Summer 2024, we read a series of articles that relate to Asian American and Pacific Islander and South West Asian/North African student experiences. All sessions of the Lunch & Learn were held in person at the APIMEDA Programs and Services office this year.

While we hope that each participant who attends reads fully each of the pieces below, we also know that many previous participants had only partially completed readings prior to the discussion. This is ok, and we hope that all participants will take an active role in contributing to the discussion. Discussion benefits from participants sharing the ways their practice is informed by the readings, actively reflecting on the reading and the discussion, and sharing the information with others you work with who would benefit from the information and perspectives.

At the end of the summer, we raffled a few copies of a variety of books that the APIMEDA Programs and Services staff have enjoyed to UC San Diego participants who attend discussions. These include books written by higher education scholars, personal narratives, and a work of fiction.

Please see the chart below for information about the dates, links to the readings (which may be updated throughout the summer). You are welcome to attend as many sessions as you can, and we recommend that you attend at least three different sessions. Please note: you may need to be logged in to the UC San Diego VPN to gain access to some of the articles through our Library system.

All discussion sessions will take place in-person from 12:00 - 1:30 p.m. Participants were encouraged to eat their lunch while we gathered.  We also are aware that people will do their best to spend as much time with us as they are able, and that may not be the full 90 minutes.

2018 Program

For Summer 2018, we read the Winter 2017 edition of the New Directions for Student Services entitled "Bridging Research and Practice to Support Asian American Students". This volume was designed to further a conversation about the experiences and needs of Asian American college students on college and university campuses.  The volume sold out soon after it was published, and the publisher is only producing online versions of the New Directions for Student Services editions moving forward.

Access to all readings in this year's edition of the Lunch and Learn is available.  Please note that you will need to be on the UC San Diego Network in order to gain access to UC San Diego Library's subscription to this volume.  This is usually something that you can do from your office computer.
